A little preparation. A better first visit.
Organize the details you want to share so you can spend more time on the conversation.
Ask what the clinic needs.
When booking, ask whether the clinic wants records sent ahead of time and how it accepts them. Confirm the appointment location, arrival instructions, expected length, and consultation fee.
Gather a useful history.
Make a list of current medications and supplements, including the product names and amounts you have been giving. Add your pet’s usual food and treats, previous procedures, and contact details for other practices involved in their care.
Write a brief timeline of the concerns you want to discuss. Note when you first noticed a change and any questions you want to remember. Ask the clinic whether photographs or short videos would be useful before sending them.
Prioritize your questions.
Choose two or three things you most want to understand. Bring those notes to the visit. If someone else helps care for your pet, consider whether there is information they should contribute.
Leave with clear next steps.
Ask for a written summary and clarify the follow-up plan, expected costs, and contact process. Keep your regular veterinarian informed about any recommendations. Do not change prescribed care based on a directory page or a general guide.
